Venous Disease Treatment

What is Venous Disease?

Venous disease occurs when the veins in the body, most commonly in the legs, do not function properly, leading to impaired blood flow. Common venous conditions include varicose veins, chronic venous insufficiency, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Over time, venous disease can cause pain, swelling, skin changes, and, in severe cases, ulcers.

Symptoms of Venous Disease

Symptoms may vary based on the type and severity of the condition but can include:

  • Bulging, twisted veins (varicose veins)
  • Aching, heaviness, or discomfort in the legs
  • Swelling, particularly in the lower legs and ankles
  • Skin discoloration or ulcers

Diagnosis of Venous Disease

Our team at Colorado Springs Cardiology uses advanced techniques, such as duplex ultrasound, to assess the function of veins and determine the best course of treatment.

Treatment Options for Venous Disease

Treatments focus on improving blood flow and alleviating symptoms. Depending on the diagnosis, we offer a range of treatment options, including:

  • Compression Therapy: Specialized stockings that help improve blood flow and reduce swelling.
  • Sclerotherapy: A minimally invasive procedure that involves injecting a solution into varicose veins to shrink them.
  • Endovenous Ablation: A highly effective treatment that uses radiofrequency energy or laser energy to close faulty veins, rerouting blood flow to healthier veins.

Iliac Vein Stenting to Treat Venous Disease

When the iliac veins (which carry blood from the legs and pelvis back to the heart) become narrowed or blocked, it can result in leg swelling and pain. Iliac vein stenting is a minimally invasive procedure where a small mesh tube (stent) is placed in the vein to keep it open and improve blood flow. This procedure can greatly relieve symptoms and prevent long-term complications of venous insufficiency.
