Carotid Artery Disease Treatment

What is Carotid Artery Disease?

Carotid artery disease occurs when the major blood vessels in the neck, which supply blood to the brain, become narrowed or blocked due to plaque buildup. This condition increases the risk of stroke, which can have serious, life-altering consequences.

Signs and Symptoms of Carotid Artery Disease

Often, carotid artery disease progresses without clear symptoms. However, some individuals may experience transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), which present as sudden transient loss of vision in one eye, weakness, paralysis (often on one side of the body), or difficulty speaking. TIAs are sometimes referred to as “mini-strokes” and are an important warning sign of a future stroke.

Diagnosing Carotid Artery Disease

At Colorado Springs Cardiology, we utilize a range of diagnostic tools to identify Carotid Artery Disease, including:

  • Carotid Ultrasound: A non-invasive imaging test that helps assess blockages or narrowing in the carotid arteries.
  • CT Angiography and MRA: These imaging techniques provide detailed views of the arteries and blood flow, helping us identify the severity of the blockage.

Treatment Options for Carotid Artery Disease

Treatment depends on the severity of the disease and individual patient factors. Our team offers a range of options, from lifestyle modifications and medication to advanced procedures.

  • Lifestyle Modifications: Changes such as smoking cessation, a heart-healthy diet, and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol levels can help prevent progression.
  • Medications: Antiplatelet drugs, statins, and blood thinners may be prescribed to lower stroke risk.
  • Procedural Options: For severe cases, interventional procedures or surgeries may be necessary to improve blood flow to the brain. These include:
    • Carotid Stenting: A minimally invasive option where a stent is placed to open the narrowed artery, performed through a small incision in the femoral artery in the leg.
    • Carotid Endarterectomy (CEA): A surgical procedure where plaque is removed from the artery.
